Sitting front row at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is every little girl’s dream. Ok, maybe not every little girl’s dream, but it sure the heck is Anna_Wintoura dream for most adult women. The ideal of sitting next to Anna Wintour or Kim and Kayne at NYFW  is, dare I say it, orgasmic.

NYFW has been on my bucket list forever and I wanted it bad. However, the reality of me being posted front row or any row at a New York Fashion Week show was as about as close as me getting a date with Charles Michael Davis (my fantasy guy).

That was until last night when I attended the Verge Collective Fashion Show, New York Fashion Week’s largest queer fashion show. I can’t say all of my NYFW dreams came true, but some did.

I have yet to get the double kiss from Anna Wintour, but I did see Margeaux Simms from Love and Hip Hop Atlanta (though I’m embarrassed to say I knew who she was). I was slightly crushed the show wasn’t held in the iconic tents, but the Brooklyn Museum was a great alternative. And although I wasn’t technically seated in the front row, I was standing in the front row, which still counts as a win for me.

Honestly, I was just happy to attend my first NYFW. I finally had firsthand experience of watching the models walk down the runway in outfits most of us would never wear, while at the same time admiring the artistry in the designs. I also now know why people wear sunglasses to these shows. The front row is as bright as walking outside after an eye exam.

IMG_1890Being that this was my first New York Fashion Week and I only attended one show, I can’t say I’m an expert to critique any shows. However, I have seen plenty of photos from other NYFW shows as I obsessed about attending one day, which should give me some street creeds.

What I felt was different about this show was the energy. Before it even started, it was like a contained dance party with a great DJ.  I also loved seeing so many people from the LGBT community and several of my black sisters and brothers at this show, as we typically are sprinkled in like pepper on rice.

And though I may have fantasized about attending NYFW, fashion to me was never about what the magazines tell you what is trending after designers present their collections. Fashion is about owning your own individuality and not looking like a hottest trend drone. It’s about telling the world through a dress, a bag or a pair of shoes, this is who I am.

So the next time you go into your closet, think for a second what does your style say about you and own the hell out it!
